Alexa.com
I was attempting to embed an Alexa.com traffic graph into the Blog to show the realtive traffic between the 24 Hour Museum and some natonals! Unfortunately I can't do that - but can embed as a widget - see the side of this page.
Books - yes I do know they exist!
Lorcan Dempsey in his fascinating Blog has highlighted Worldcat Identities - rather than me trying to explaining what this is - just see the entry for Joseph Conrad ...

EU Kids Online
An interesting report on Childrens' Safety issues from across Europe, published by the EU Kids Online Project at the LSE. It is in an analysis stage at the moment, but has produced a good overview of the issues and a synthesis of existing information. More to come ...

UNESCO at L'Oreal HQ
Interesting to see UNESCO plastered all over the L'Oreal HQ in Hammersmith - advertising the Women in Science Award that they sponsor.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Spam weapon helps preserve books
BBC NEWS | Technology | Spam weapon helps preserve books
Fascinating article explaining how the Internet Archive Million Book project is using the words that can't be recognised by OCR as the spam-beating words that you have to type correctly to log into systems.
Almost as good as the National Library of Vienna, which digitised the card catalogue to its print collection, and got only a couple of key index fields typed in. Now, when you order a photo (and pay to digitise it on demand) you also complete their catalogue record for them. Talk about 'user-generated content'!

Lovelibraries Flickr panel
I've just added a panel to the Blog of Flickr images from the Libraries and Librians group, tagged with 'lovelibraries'. Right now there is a grand total of 2 (I dont take many picture of libraries), but the idea is to get people to use the tag, and then to have the panel on the www.lovelibraries.com website. Will have to wait for DP to upload his pictures to check that this will work properly. It took a while for the panel to work properly, so there may be something going on behind the scenes that isn't quite right.

Work experience podcast
Work experience podcast
A fascinating podcast about work experience with the Portable Antiquities Scheme, at Birmingham Musuem. Shows how a bit of imagination and flair with the technology can produce some great content!

My library - Google Book Search
My library - Google Book Search
I have just been playing with the new features added to Google Book Search. You can search to find books in your own collection and create a personal library on Google books. Same sort of idea as Librarything, but has the benefit of being able to search the text of your own book collection, to import all the details of your own books, just by entering ISBNs, and to have an RSS feed of books you have just added.
All together, some really neat ideas here, particularly if you have lots of out of copyright books - eg old archaeology / local history books!
What is even more amazing is that I found an old MDA book that I wrote, with Tony Gill, and followed the link to WorldCat. This tells me that there are 13 copies in Libraries - including the Getty, Japan and New Zealand. Following the link to Amazon - where I have installed the Talis @libraries toolbar, I see that it is in another few University libraries in the UK.
How sad, and amazing, is all that!

Oxford Internet Survey - 2007
The Oxford Interent Institute has just published the latest survey of online trends in the UK, sponsored by, amongst others, HEFCE and the British Library. It makes a very interesting read - and particularly shows how libraries are an important way for people to access the internet, particularly those who are 'lapsed' and have never used the internet. It also highlights the role of librarians as trusted guides and libraries are the third most significant source of information after the internet and friends and family.
I will need to look at this carefully - not least of which is that 77% of people use the internet at least once a month to find information about local events.

I am at a fascinating JISC Conference in Cardiff. Unfortunately I missed the session linked to here - but the whole conference is being blogged. This session is fascinating - with its different perspectives.

MultimediaN E-Culture Project - Basic Search
MultimediaN E-Culture Project - Basic Search
This is the project that Guus Schreiber talked about at the EVA EDL Workshop. It uses semantic web technologies - and is really neat if you type in 'picasso'. This (if you use Firefox) finds work with this in the title, works by him, and works by people he was associated with. This all comes from AAT relations. The 'piece de resistance' is an automatically generated timeline of works and related artists.
Guus says that all we have to do is to 'SKOSify' our vocabularies and it will all be wonderful. His demonstrator certainly makes you think he could well be right
